UFD Training and the Utica Fire Academy

Training

The Training Division of the Utica Fire Department has many responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include: Department training (daily school), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Drills, ordering equipment, maintaining equipment, testing equipment, supplying personnel with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and record keeping.

The goal of the training division is to ensure that every firefighter is properly trained and equipped to deal with any situation.

The Utica Fire Academy

The Utica Fire Academy was established in March of 2004 to help train prospective firefighters from across New York State. The Academy has trained hundreds of recruits from fire departments across the state, as well as students from Mohawk Valley Community College’s (MVCC’s) Fire Protection Technology Degree Program, https://catalog.mvcc.edu/current/programs/aas-fire-protection-tech.php Each year two 14-week Fire Recruit Training Classes are held in Utica, New York, a central location in the state.

When a recruit graduates from the Utica Fire Academy he or she will have completed 18 NYS certificate courses, be nationally certified in Firefighter I and Firefighter II, and also be a New York State Code Compliance Technician (Fire Inspector).

The Fire Academy employs a certified physical trainer to prepare the recruits to pass the Cadet Physical Agility Test or CPAT. Our CPAT success rate with recruits is 100%, and the Utica Fire Academy holds the national and state CPAT records for men (00:05:51) and the state record for women (00:07:19).

The Utica Fire Academy has set high standards for the firefighters they train, which is why many departments from across the state choose to send their recruits to Utica, New York.
