David R. Roefaro, Mayor
City of Utica, New York
04/01/10 - It's back.....

                    Tell it to the Mayor

     "May I" returns

Real success stories platform for ambitious agenda

April 1, 2010- (Utica, NY) – We're not fooling! For the second year in a row, Utica Mayor David Roefaro is imploring residents….. to complain. Last year, the mayor announced that the month of May would be 'clean and green' for city residents, through an initiative dubbed "May I". Well this year, he's bringing it back in full force, citing some impressive statistics.

Last year, over 180 people left messages on the "May I Hotline."

Over 400 people logged more serious issues with the Codes and DPW Department.

Of those almost 600 "May I" calls, everyone (who left their phone number) got a returned phone call.

This year, Roefaro is hoping to double the amount of calls to the hotline and solve over 600 issues.

The mayor's "May I" initiative asks Uticans one simple question: "May I help you?" The mayor is kicking off the pubic awareness portion of the campaign today at 1400 Howard Ave. The abandoned and vandalized garage will be torn down during the mayor's ambitious campaign.

"From now, until May 1, 2009, call me, write me, or email me at mayor@cityofutica.com and help me to compile the list of the properties or streets you want to make green again, and during the month of May, we will address every problem and every concern you have before the summer even begins. This summer will be clean, green, and seen as an example for rebuilding our civic infrastructure, one wrapper at a time."

The mayor wants to affirm to residents that getting their potholes, litter, debris, and bad neighbor complaints on the "May I" list will fast-track them through the general codes and DPW process, a process that normally deals with more complex codes, and varying DPW issues.

To fast-track your "May I" request Roefaro has created the "May I Hotline", which will be in service from today, until May 1, 2010, when his initiative will be underway and enforced. The "May I Hotline" explains what to do. Residents just need to follow the directions.

"On May 1, 2010, I will be hitting the streets with my codes and DPW department ridding this city of litter, and other nuisances residents might feel are to trivial to call about. "May I" was created for the clean and responsible residents City Hall serves, and I want them to call me," the Mayor said.

To add your request onto the list, call Mayor Roefaro's "May I Hotline" at 315.269.3109. Leave a detailed message and a number for Mayor Roefaro to follow up with you at.

*The "May I Hotline" does not replace the general codes department, their 792.0163 number, or their daily codes efforts.

*The "May I Hotline" does not replace the general DPW department, their 738.1341 number, or their daily public works efforts.

*The "May I Hotline" is temporary and focused on litter, graffiti, and remedying bad neighbors who think your neighborhood is a garbage dump.
