12/11/09 - Mayor makes police complement suggestion to council

Mayor explores options to lower police complement as unpredictable city budget looms

December 11, 2009 – (Utica, NY) – Utica Mayor David Roefaro has announced that he is requesting the city Common Council lower the City of Utica Police complement today. The announcement comes at a time when city department heads have been asked to cut their budgets in preparation of one of the city's most difficult budget years.

Roefaro wants to eliminate three unfilled positions, and eliminate three other grant funded positions if their grant funding runs out in the future.

"With this announcement, the city taxpayers would only be responsible for 180 uniformed police officers. The total complement would reflect 183 officers, three of which are grant funded positions," the mayor said.

"Cities around New York are experiencing similar financial challenges in this very difficult economic time, and Utica is no different," Roefaro said.  "I will continue to make hard decisions on behalf of taxpayers, while doing the best I can to ensure city services remain strong."
