Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When will my street be paved?
A: The City has approximately 206 miles of paved streets, it cost's approximately $500,000 per mile to rebuild a street and the annual paving budget is approximately $1,500,000. Therefore approximately 3.0 miles of road can be paved each year, this equates to a 68.7 year paving cycle.
Q: When will my curb be replaced?
A: There is no money allocated for curb replacement.
Q: When does the sidewalk reimbursement program begin?
A: When winter is over. The temperature must remain above freezing while the concrete is curing.
Q: Can I replace my own sidewalks?
A: Yes, but be sure you are capable of doing an acceptable job. Past experience with individuals performing substandard work has resulted in more stringent requirements that will be strictly enforced.
Q: How long does it take to get reimbursed?
A: Between six and ten weeks.
Q: Why does my cellar flood every time it rains hard?
A: A large percentage of the storm sewer system in the City is over 80 years old. During that 80-year period, the City has expanded exponentially, therefore increasing the demands on the old existing sewer. There is no quick fix for this problem; the process must start at the farthest downstream point and progress upstream to relieve the stress on the system. This is a huge project and could easily consume a few hundred million dollars.
