STARTING SALARY/RANGE:   $23,371-$25,891            Comptroller’s Office  

       

VACANCIES: There is currently one (1) vacancy in the Office of the Comptroller.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill this vacancy and any other vacancies as they occur in all agencies and special districts under the jurisdiction of the Utica Municipal Civil Service Commission.

 

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be legal residents of the City of Utica for at least four (4) months immediately preceding the date of the written examination.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School and three (3) years of clerical experience of which one (1) year shall have been in public contact work involving the handling and accounting for large sums of money.

 

NOTE:            Part-time experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the full-time experience requirement.  The following criteria will be used in order to pro-rate experience:

 

08 - 15 hours per week......................1/4 time

16 - 23 hours per week......................1/2 time

24 - 31 hours per week......................3/4 time

 

DUTIES: This is important public contact work involving responsibility for receiving, receipting, disbursing and accounting for large amounts of money rapidly and accurately.  The work requires the keeping of accurate control records of all money handled.  Employees are responsible for shortages in their own work.  The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with prescribed procedures.  The work is checked by immediate observation or by another step in the account keeping process.

 

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION:

 

1.                  Cashiering Principles and Practices

These questions are designed to test for an understanding of such things as proper cashiering practices; terminology; and cashiering issues pertaining to currency, checks and other negotiable instruments.

 

2.                  Coding/Decoding Information

These questions test for the ability to use written directions to code and decode information accurately.  You will be asked to apply sets of coding rules to code information and to interpret coded information. 

 

 

 

Complete directions will be provided; no previous knowledge of or training in any coding system is required.

 


3.                  Handling Money

These questions test for the ability to count money and make change correctly.  Pictures of money will be used to simulate the transactions.

 

4.                  Name and Number Checking

These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike.  Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third.  You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.

 

5.                  Understanding and Interpreting Written Material

These questions test how well you comprehend written material.  You will be provided with brief reading selections and will be asked questions about the selections.  All the information required to answer the questions will be presented in the selections; you will not be required to have any special knowledge relating to the subject areas of the selections.

THE USE OF CALCULATORS IS ALLOWED FOR THIS EXAMINATION.

 

Calculators are permitted: Unless specifically prohibited, candidates are permitted to use QUIET, hand-held, solar or battery powered calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, such as computers, spell checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, dictionaries and any similar devises are PROHIBITED.
